158th Anniversary – 2021

During many anniversary weekends in Gettysburg, some actors arrive into town from their starring roles in the movie Gettysburg that was filmed in 1993 around town. However, seeing them in person without security or people around them protecting them from “too many people” doesn’t really happen in Gettysburg. People understand that coming to this battlefield is about the soldiers that fought here, not trying to get an autograph from a Hollywood actor or actress.

Here are just some of the famous names that played a role within the movie Gettysburg in 1993.

  • Martin Sheen — General Robert E. Lee
  • Jeff Daniels — Colonel Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain
  • Sam Elliot — Brigadier General John Buford
  • Stephen Lang — Major General George E. Pickett
  • Bo Brinkman — Colonel Walter Herron Taylor

They continue to come back for movie anniversaries and to tour the battlefield on their own time. This anniversary brought out a man that has been here multiple times in support museums and continues to be part of the community. Can you spot him in this picture?

Here’s a closer look as he talks to the crowd. Notice that no one is going up to him for an autograph, but more listening to him talk about the history and the civil war.

Stephen Lang speaks to the crowd on July 3, 2023

Mr. Lang had played Major General George E. Pickett in Gettysburg in 1993. A decade later, he played Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson in Gods and Generals. Both movies were with the movie director Ronald Maxwell. Since this time, Mr. Lang will be in another moving representing Gettysburg 1863 with the movie director Bo Brinkman in late 2026.
