I’m not sure how much more busy this map could be. The location of Turner’s Gap is near the Mountain House on the map. The Confederates held the high ground, and the Union attacked uphill through the “gap” in the South Mountains. Of my adventures here in this area, there are no monuments around Turner’s Gap, except for plaques that talk about the battles in Turner’s, Fox’s, and Crampton’s Gap. Here is the attack map of the battle.

There is a large chapel at Turner’s Gap called the Dahlgren Chapel. This chapel was built well after the Civil War in 1881. However, there is importance of this chape surrounding the Civil War. The widow of Rear Admiral John Dahlgren, who was in the United States Navy, constructed this chapel.

The battle of the USS Monitor and the CSS Virginia (formerly the frigate USS Merrimack) occurred on March 9, 1862. Both were ironclad warships that fought within the Battle of Hampton Roads. The USS Monitor was the first ironclad ship in the United States Navy.
